Tutoring
About

Hi there! I'm Sarah Hill.
I have been tutoring for seven years in a variety of subjects, but my passion is Language and English reading. I'm not your run-of-the-mill tutor—I truly care about my students, and I work to teach them holistic skills which will last them the rest of their lives.

My Background
I attended a Liberal Arts College in the United States for my undergraduate degree, with a focus on English writing, Latin, history, and a lesser focus in biology. During my time at college, I realized that I had a passion for language and translation, so I next obtained a Masters degree in Applied Linguistics and Translation from Trinity Western University.

Methodology
Below are three of my most important teaching beliefs, which can be applied to any teaching situation.

Adaptive teaching
Every person is so incredibly different! And because I tutor in one-on-one or small group contexts, I have the freedom to adapt my teaching methods to the student's needs. I tailor my games, oral communication, visual communication, and other elements of teaching style in order to help my student learn quicker and more comfortably. I believe it is important to receive constant feedback from students [and parents] throughout the year so as to improve my adaptive teaching.

Interactive learning
Students learn best when they are discovering and interacting with a situation, rather than passively sitting while information is being shoveled into their heads. I continually push myself to find teaching methods that will be time effective but still utilize this element of discovery. If possible, I teach by asking a question, producing an unknown prop, or providing a puzzle that the student must attempt to solve.

Learning how to learn
If you give a man a fish... My goal as a tutor is not to boost my student's grades for a few months. I want to tutor them in such a way that they will not need tutoring when they reach their goals. They will have gained the critical thinking, memory, and study skills to learn on their own. And most importantly, they will have gained or grown in their love of learning. I believe in learners for life!
